MILESTONES - Rock'in Weights
Spring 2014
MIT
MAS.S61 3D Rapid Prototyping and Rendering
Mentor: Amit Zoran
OBJECTIVE:
Design and print a simple hybrid: a support structure to hold or connect with a simple organic element (e.g. leaf, branch, banana, rocks) and design respecting the organic object.
DURATION: 1.5 weeks
EXPERIENCE:
I started inspired to make a hybrid design by looking at pictures of milestones and sketching designs inspired by them. Following the dimensions of a standard dumbell and confirming it with the average human grip radii, I CADDed a design of a milestones like dumbell. The prototype has 5 parts: 2 caps, 2 housings, and a handle. The inside of the housings are also filled with pebbles found at MIT. I printed the parts on the Form 1 using two different resins, the white and the clear, and used TAMIYA paints to paint the prototype. The print material on the Form 1 is not necesarilly best suited for the application. If a future prototype were to be made, I would use a stronger, tougher material and stiffen the handle portion more.
